The term "human control" of autonomous systems has been replaced with
"human oversight" of artificial intelligence, which is the topic of this article, which
investigates the recent change in focus that has been taking place. While the first
concept has been widely discussed in international legal talks for close to ten years, the
second concept is the word that is being used in the European Union's most recent
proposal for an artificial intelligence act. After that, the paper delves into the concepts
of "control" and "human oversight" in relation to the European Union Artificial
Intelligence Act. It places these concepts within the larger context of the Act, and it
highlights both the shortcomings of the Act as well as potential solutions to enhance it.
