Governance of artificial intelligence

Abstract

The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and the intensification of AI adoption in fields such as 
autonomous vehicles, lethal weapon systems, robotics, and other similar fields present governments with significant 
challenges because they are required to manage the scale and speed of the socio-technical transitions that are taking 
place. Governance of artificial intelligence is a severely undeveloped topic, despite the fact that there is a growing 
body of literature on many areas of artificial intelligence. The new uses of artificial intelligence provide prospects 
for improving economic efficiency and quality of life; yet, they also produce consequences that were not anticipated 
or intended, and they present new types of hazards that need to be managed for the time being. To maximize the 
advantages of artificial intelligence while minimizing the hazards associated with it, governments all over the globe 
need to have a greater understanding of the breadth and depth of the risks that are presented, as well as the 
regulatory and governance procedures and structures that are necessary to handle these problems. Unpacking 
artificial intelligence and explaining why governance of AI should be receiving a great deal more attention given 
the plethora of challenges it provides are the topics that are covered in this introductory essay. After that, it provides 
a summary of the papers that were included in the special edition and emphasizes the most important contributions 
made by those pieces. Including emerging governance approaches to artificial intelligence, policy capacity 
development, exploring legal and regulatory problems of artificial intelligence and robotics, and lingering concerns 
and gaps that need attention, this special issue presents the many facets of the challenges that are associated with the 
governance of artificial intelligence. The purpose of this special issue is to provide scholars and practitioners with 
the opportunity to get a better understanding of the issues and complexity associated with artificial intelligence 
governance, as well as to identify potential future areas for investigation into this topic.
