In recent years, there has been a growing focus on corporate governance studies in developing
economies. Despite the global focus on governance changes and the increased activity of
governments, shareholders, and other business stakeholders, corporate scandals and managerial
failures persist. Scholars and professionals are starting to recognise that national business
systems have firm-level governance processes that are impacted by political, social, and legal
macro-institutions. In collaboration with Corporate Governance: An International Review
(CGIR), we arranged a special issue conference on the topic of "Challenges in Corporate
Governance in Emerging Economies" in Edinburgh, UK, from December 4-5, 2015, to further
research on governance issues in emerging markets. The characteristics of corporate
governance in developing nations are introduced, the articles in the special issue are reviewed,
and future study prospects are discussed.
